In 1935, 90% of American farms were without electricity. In 1939, Pare Lorentz, the head of the United States Film Service, hired Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens to direct a film showing the advantages of bringing electricity to the farm. Power for the Parkinsons, narrated by Walter Cronkite, tells the story of the making of that classic 1940 film.
